Ultrasound

Point-of-care ultrasound is a rapid scan used during emergencies or surgeries to immediately detect fluid, internal bleeding, or major organ distress. In contrast, advanced scans—such as a complete cat ultrasound scan or detailed abdominal examination in Calgary—are comprehensive procedures booked in advance. These scheduled evaluations thoroughly inspect internal organ structures or heart valves, requiring dedicated appointment times for complete analysis.

To ensure clear, high-resolution images, we usually shave a small section of fur where the ultrasound probe contacts the skin. Ultrasound is completely painless and non-invasive, so most pets lie comfortably without sedation. However, if your pet is anxious, in pain, or requires an in-depth evaluation where precise immobility is necessary, mild, safe sedation may be recommended.

Preparing your pet for a scheduled ultrasound helps ensure clear imaging and a stress-free experience for both you and your pet. 

Instructions vary depending on whether your pet is having an abdominal ultrasound or an echocardiogram (heart scan).

Preparation for an Abdominal Ultrasound

Because food and gas inside the stomach and intestines can block sound waves and create shadows on the images, proper fasting is essential.

• Fasting (8–12 Hours Prior): Withhold food for 8 to 12 hours before the scheduled appointment. Fasting allows the stomach to empty, reducing gas and making abdominal organs like the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and spleen much easier to evaluate.
• Water Access: Keep fresh water available until you leave for the clinic unless explicitly instructed otherwise by your vet. Staying hydrated makes it easier to evaluate the kidneys and bladder.
• Full Bladder: Try to prevent your pet from urinating for 1 to 2 hours before the scan. A full urinary bladder acts as a clear "acoustic window," allowing the vet to thoroughly inspect the bladder walls and surrounding structures.
• Regular Medications: Ask us beforehand whether you should administer morning medications. Generally, critical medications (like heart or seizure meds) can be given with a tiny lick of water or wet food, but confirm with your clinical team first.

Preparation for an Echocardiogram (Heart Ultrasound)

Echocardiograms evaluate heart muscle thickness, valve movement, and blood flow patterns.

• No Fasting Required: Unlike abdominal scans, fasting is usually not necessary for an echocardiogram unless your pet is scheduled for other blood tests or sedation at the same time.
• Keep Things Calm: Try to keep your pet calm and relaxed on the ride to the clinic. An elevated heart rate or stress can alter cardiac measurements during the scan.
